Virginia State University will hold a sheep artificial insemination workshop on October 17, 2014, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Randolph Farm, Petersburg, VA.
This workshop will be conducted by Dr. Stephan Wildeus, Research Professor- Small Ruminants and Dr. Dahlia O’Brien, Small Ruminant Extension Specialist. They will provide an overview of assisted reproduction in small ruminants and the principles of estrus synchronization, semen collection, and simple vaginal artificial insemination. Producers will be given an opportunity to engage in various hands-on activities associated with AI.

SVMGA members Bill and Cherie Guerrant of White Flint Farm have made it to the last round of a national competition for a $5,000 Farm to Forks grant sponsored by food service management company Bon Appetite.
Part of the Guerrants’ success is showcased at Averett University, where the cafeteria serves chemical-free and sustainable food, including goat, from White Flint Farm.

Don’t forget the SVMGA business meeting Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, 7:00 p.m at the Halifax County Ag Center. Kimley Blanks, the new Halifax County Management Assistant/Ag Marketing Director, is planning to attend the Thursday meeting to introduce herself and get to know the members.
The Sept. 20th sale was a success thanks to the hard work of all of the volunteers and the consignors.
The prices per pound were as follows:
There were approximately 330 animals sold. More information will be presented at the Thursday meeting.
The next sale is scheduled for Friday evening November 14, 2014.

Remember: SVMGA will be having a consignment sale Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. Those wishing to consign animals should call Debbie Duffer at 434-470-0550 or 434-735-8759 by Wednesday Sept 10th. Click here for all the information.
SVMGA will also have a Consignment sale Friday evening November 14, 2014 if we at least 50 animals are consigned.
Also, a couple of people are looking to buy animals:
