April 16 Farm Tour – Don’t Miss It!

SVMGA FARM TOUR Saturday, April 16th, 10 AM at Hudson Heritage Farms 14242 River Road South Boston, VA 24592 (farm is located in the community of Elmo) – 434-753-9327 if you have any questions.

This is a chance to see a lot more than boers.  Hudson Heritage Farms features Toggenburg goats as well as many different heritage breeds of livestock, including Scottish Highland cattle, Red Wattle hogs, Horned Dorset sheep and a Tibetan yak.

This is for SVMGA members. (In case of rain, this farm tour will be canceled.)

Note: Hudson Heritage Farms is a working establishment filled with large animals, lots of farm equipment and several dogs.  Please, do not bring pets on the farm tour, and ensure that minors and city folk are adequately supervised to ensure their safety.


From South Boston:  Take River Road heading towards Danville. Once you pass old Elmo Store (Birch/Elmo Road) you are almost there.  Look for a small sign on the right side of the road for the farm (about 1/8 mile from old store).  Turn right into driveway located in a hayfield, driving through field where you will be met at the power gate located under the big oak tree.

From HWY 58: Turn north at Turberville Fire Dept. onto Melon Road. Drive over the Dan river until you find Stebbins Road (first right after the Dan), and turn right. Stebbins Road dead ends into River Road where you will turn left. Once you pass old Elmo Store (Birch/Elmo Road) you are almost there.  Look for a small sign on the right side of the road for the farm (about 1/8 mile from old store).  Turn right into driveway located in a hayfield, driving through field where you will be met at the power gate located under the big oak tree.

We are having a GOAT CONSIGNMENT SALE in May! Got any ready for market? If so, we would LOVE to hear from you.

Upcoming Guest Speaker

The Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association (SVMGA) will meet at the Halifax County Agricultural Center, Farm Way Lane, Halifax, Thursday, April 28, 7 p.m.

Guest speaker Bruce Pierce, district manager, Halifax Soil and Water Conservation, will talk about applying for best management practices (BMP) cost sharing assistance for grazing land protection–in particular cross fencing. Interested persons are invited.
