Kid Health Management

Don’t miss the kid health management lecture at the Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association monthly meeting, Thursday, February 24, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the Halifax County Ag Center.

The speaker will be Dr. Kevin D. Pelzer, an associate professor of production management medicine and epidemiology in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences in the Virginia- Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Tuskegee Institute and his M.P.V.M. from the University of California- Davis. Prior to joining the college in 1987, he was an adjunct clinical instructor of ambulatory field services at Iowa State University. His research interests are public health and sheep and goats. Pelzer is board certified as a diplomate by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

In the classroom, Dr. Pelzer presents clinical cases in which he and the students work through. These cases involve similar concepts and techniques that are used in small animal medicine. Pelzer was named Teacher of the Year in 2001, 2002, and 2003 and received the Bayer Faculty Recognition Award in 2006 for his outstanding teaching and his compassionate and caring attitude for his students.

SVMGA February Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association is Thursday, February 24, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the Halifax County Ag Center.

The guest speaker will be Dr Pelzer from Va Tech. He will speak about general goat herd health.

Don’t forget to renew your membership if you haven’t done so already. It is $10 to renew.

February Meat Goat Sale Update

Price structure for the SVMGA meat goat sale to be held at the Halifax County Ag Center, Saturday, February 12 8:00 to 10:30, is as follows:

Kids, over 35 pounds………………… $1.80/lb.

Yearling Bucks…………………………. $1.25/lb.

Cull type does……………………………… $.85/lb.

Cull type bucks……………………………. $.90/lb.

It appears that these are very good prices, however the only condition is that we need about 50 animals or it will not pay for the buyer to make the trip.  It is imperative that you call Bill Crews at 434-476-2235 with an indication of the number and type of animals you will be bringing. Feel free to leave a message. If not enough animals have been registered by 5 p.m. Friday, we will have to cancel the sale.

February Meat Goat Sale
